Protecting And Using Your Fencing During Heavy Snowfall

Posted on

Do you live in an area that is prone to heavy snowfall? Have you done everything that you can to ensure that your fencing isn't damaged this winter? Here, you'll find a few tips to help you protect your fencing from damage, and how to make your fencing work to keep the snow under control.

Place Marking Flags

If your fencing tends to get piled up with snow, you'll need to place some marking flags on some of the posts. Marking flags are just bright flags at the top of a long pole. They are attached to the fence posts to stand well above the height of the fence. This will make it possible to see your fencing even when the snow is piled up around it. When the fencing is able to be seen, you'll have less problems with snowplows pushing the snow into it or accidentally hitting it with the plow itself.

Use Warning Tape

Plastic warning tape can be picked up along with some cheap wooden posts to stick it to. You want to create a border outside of the fencing that will prevent people and plows from getting too close to the fencing. This will leave enough space between the fencing and the piles of snow to prevent the posts from being damaged.

Use the Fencing to your Benefit

Does your yard allow for lots of wind to blow the snow across your driveway or sidewalks? Well, you can use the surrounding fencing to decrease the amount of drifting snow that you have on your property.

Snow fencing can be attached to the existing fencing to stop the blowing snow. One thing to be aware of is that if your fencing is older and the posts are failing, you do run the risk of the posts getting damaged by the strong winds.

You can also install lighting toward the top of the fencing to help light up the area during the long winter nights. Those sidewalk markers and ground-mounted lights aren't going to do much unless you take the time to dig them out from under the snow.

Talk with your local fencing professional to learn more about what you can do to protect your fencing from winter damage. They can also answer any questions you might have about the other accessories available that will help to serve all of your fencing needs. Hopefully, by this time next year, you'll have everything in place and ready to take on a winter beating. For more information, contact companies like Absolute Fencing LLC.
